October - Eric Whitacre
October premiered in 2000, and is named after the composer’s favourite month, which, through its crisp air and subtle change in light, instills a sentiment in the composer. This lush, beautiful piece is specifically written for winds. The simple, pastoral melodies and subsequent harmonies, inspired by the great British composers, are perfect for capturing the natural, quiet beauty of the season.
SOUSA! - John Philip Sousa (arr. Warren Barker)
The great American composer John Philip Sousa is hailed as “The March King” and is best-known for his many military marches. This pompous, gallant, brilliant medley gives us a glimpse into Sousa’s musical legacy by bringing together High School Cadets, The Thunderer, El Capitan, Stars and Stripes Forever, and brings us back to the heyday of Romantic military marches.

Foster Songs Fantasy - Stephen Foster (arr. Goto Yo)
這首樂曲包含了六首他的名曲:《Camptown Races》、《Old Folks at Home》、《Beautiful Dreamer》、《Oh! Susanna》、《Better Times are Coming》及《Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair》,讓大家重温他短暫豐富的人生對音樂的貢獻。
Stephen Foster, known as “the father of American music”, is probably the first composer that is recognizably “American”, though primarily known as a writer of parlour and minstrel music. This delightful piece for bands combines six of his favorites: Camptown Races, Old Folks at Home, Beautiful Dreamer, Oh! Susanna, Better Times are Coming, and Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, as a celebration of his short, productive life.
Pirates of the Caribbean - Klaus Badelt (arr. Michael Sweenty)
Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most successful film franchises in the last 20 years. It follows the bizarre adventures (and mishaps) of Captain Jack Sparrow across the seas. The iconic music of the soundtrack brings to mind immediately his heroic, sentimental, if sometimes comic, voyages to the end of the world (and back again) with his friends and crew, and sails us to the fascinating age of piracy.

Second Suite for Military Band in F major - Gustav Holst
Holst composed the Second Suite in 1911, but the piece did not receive its first public performance until 1922, at the Royal Albert Hall, London. It is speculated that it was written for an occasion like the Festival of Empire in 1911 at the Crystal Palace. Unlike Holst’s First Suite, the Second Suite is based fully on materials from folk songs and morris dances, as was the fashion of that time. The edition played in today’s concert is a revised edition that has added the parts for some lower woodwinds, but in essence true to the glorious spirit of this classic composition of band music.
